Wings for Autism®/Wings for All® are airport “rehearsals” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
Wings for Autism® and Wings for All®, one of The Arc’s newest national initiatives, are airport “rehearsals” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and people with other intellectual/developmental disabilities, their families and aviation professionals. The programs provides families with the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security and boarding a plane. Wings for Autism and Wings for All also give airport, airline, Transportation Security Administration professionals and other personnel the opportunity to observe, interact and deliver their services in a structured, learning environment. This experience is equally useful for families that have a member with other intellectual or developmental disabilities that are concerned about the ability of their family member to travel.
"I don't have the words to adequately express my thanks for this evening's Wings for Autism event. My daughter, Katie, who speaks mostly in scripted phrases, turned to me (after the amazing water cannon display at the end of our plane.ride) and said "we had fun on the plane!" That was a moment I will always treasure!! We have been so concerned about how Katie would deal with the plethora of unknowns associated with air travel and you have now made future air travel a reality for us!! Too many times, as a parent of a child with ASD, you feel like doors are closed to your child and/or your family. Well, tonight, you gave her wings!! Thank you!" -Donna G. (parent and Wings for Autism Charlotte attendee)
